Backwoods Boys
Canada
Приєднався 1 бер 2008
We (Dale and Shane Barks) have spent most of our lives on a remote northern trapline. We were filmed for Discovery Channel's "Sons of Winter," which followed our family around on our trapline.
Dale has an honours degree in Environmental Biology; a field which offers unique insight into the animal behaviour and ecosystem mechanics that we come into contact with every day while trapping. He has been enjoying life trapping and found employment using his backwoods experience to monitor threatened woodland caribou populations. He is currently completing his masters degree studying Chronic Wasting Disease in deep-boreal whitetails.
Shane is building his construction experience during the summers and guides for the family outfitting business (black bear and whitetail deer) in the spring and summer. He has built Bear Essential Wilderness Adventures (literally, including the hunting lodge) over the past few years and is kind enough to employ his poor secondary-education-seeking brothers.

Exploring an Abandoned Trapper Cabin in the Rocky Mountains
The Backwoods Boys ran across an abandoned trapper cabin while exploring the Rocky Mountains this summer and spent some time exploring the craftsmanship that went into building this remote outpost cabin. Reminiscent of the dugout shack of the Mad Trapper of Rat River, the log cabin shares a lot of similarities with the historic cabins of the boreal forest on their own trapline, yet it is unique in several ways, making for a fascinating exploration tour. Check it out with us, and let us know if you can identify the unknown component hanging on either end of the cabin.

How to Remove Beaver Castors for Lures
Переглядів 1,7 тис.3 роки тому
One of the most important ingredients for almost all trapping lures is beaver castor. Grated castors are the foundation of any scents we make for marten, fisher, lynx, coyote, and wolverine. While many trappers already know how to remove these, some may be unfamiliar with the process, so we put together a tutorial on how to remove the beaver castors. Thank you to: Bear Essential Wilderness Adve...
How to Make a Killer Lynx Lure
Переглядів 2,3 тис.3 роки тому
The Backwoods Boys are back with a long-promised and often-requested tutorial on mixing your own lynx lure. Lynx are curious animals, and the proper selection of ingredients can be just what it takes to coax them into a set. This lure capitalizes on that curiosity, and combines curiosity scents with some of the lynx's favourite foods to create an enticing call lure that has been responsible for...
How to Trap Beavers Under the Ice
Переглядів 6 тис.3 роки тому
Beaver meat is one of the most important tools in a trapper's toolbox, but it can be difficult to catch beavers once winter has set in. The Backwoods Boys have spent a lot of years learning from old timers and their own mistakes, and are excited to offer a step-by-step tutorial for under the ice beaver trapping. Key steps include: determining if a beaver house is "live" or "active", choosing be...
Darting and GPS Collaring a White-tailed Deer
Переглядів 1,6 тис.3 роки тому
As part of my biology master's project studying Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), I am darting white-tailed deer and attaching GPS collars. As mentioned in a previous video, there is a significant amount of work that goes into this. Rather than make other darting videos extremely long and detailed, this is a stand-alone video showing the entire procedure, from proper dart placement, to telemetry t...
Ice Fishing for Northern Pike
Переглядів 2013 роки тому
Join the Backwoods Boys (and Jamie) this week as they attempt to catch their supper from a notoriously poor northern lake. Who will catch the most fish? Who will catch the biggest fish? Well, it sure won't be Shane! It's a good thing the outdoors are just so enjoyable on their own, and the success of an outing doesn't depend on the number or size of fish caught.
Wild Canadian Lynx: Up Close and Personal

Join the Backwoods Boys in an "on the fly" episode as the unexpected shows up right outside the cabin door. Shane argues with the visitor about who the bait beaver carcass belongs too, and his housecat, Arya, (brought north to keep mice out of the cabin) doesn't seem quite sure how to feel about the realization that she is far from the biggest cat in the neighbourhood.
Deep Boreal Deer Darting
Переглядів 6603 роки тому
Dale and Randy are out on the Backwoods Boys' trapline to set up deer blinds and dart white-tailed deer as part of Dale's biology masters project studying Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD). These deer are some of the most elusive whitetails they have ever hunted, and capturing even a single one does not prove easy. Join them on a unique northern Saskatchewan deer hunt in the middle of a massive bli...
Pneu-Dart X-Calibre Unboxing
Переглядів 1,4 тис.3 роки тому
Dale has just received a special package in the mail from Pneu-Dart, and he can't wait to check it out. A brand-new G2 X-Calibre dart projector by Pneu-Dart is exactly the tool needed to capture white-tailed deer in the frigid northern Saskatchewan forest for his biology masters project on Chronic Wasting Disease. Check out the exquisite craftmanship that has gone into creating this precision t...
How to Skin a Beaver
Переглядів 1,8 тис.4 роки тому
The Backwoods Boys are back with a tutorial on how to skin beavers. These pelts have long been a staple of the Canadian fur trade ever since the early days of the Coureur des bois, the Hudson's Bay Company, and intrepid explorers like Pierre Radisson. While beaver pelt prices have remained low the last few years, beaver meat remains a staple in the trapper's bait repertoire, whether the trapper...

Join the Backwoods Boys this week on a heart pounding, back breaking adventure! With increasing bear activity right in their yard the last few years, they decide to set up a bear site and target one especially brave bear, named Mr. Choco. A huge shoutout to my Dad, who made an excellent cameraman this week! As a side note, I would like to apologize for the audio in places. I just got a new case...
A Backwoods Proposal
Переглядів 3 тис.4 роки тому
There's officially a girl joining the Backwoods Boys! Join the Backwoods Boys for a day of (supposedly) scouting for bears and an exciting proposal along the banks of the Torch River. Dale has been looking for a waterfall to propose at for months, but Covid-19 has, unfortunately, thrown a bit of a wrench in the gears for his proposal plans. Nothing says "I love you" like a forest proposal, surr...

Beaver Hunting and Polar-Dip Retrieval
Beavertail was considered a real delicacy during the mountain man and fur trade era trappers and Old West outdoorsmen of many stripes. But I think this was primarily based on the appetites and physical conditions of those consuming it. For 300 years the peoples of European descent their staple foods were jerky and hardtack.... Jerky has very little fat in it animal fat tends to go rancid and get moldy relatively quickly. As some may not know, hardtack is a type of dense biscuit (British English) or cracker (American English) made from flour, water, and sometimes salt. Interestingly, it cantains no fats or oils of any kind fsince hardtack molds and goes bad quickly if it has oils in it whereas without oils and stored properly has been known to remain fully edible for 25 years. For over 300 years, explorers , traders and others not in cities or on farms depended on hardtack and jerky as their primary foods.. This was true for soldiers of the Napolonic Wars across Europe, likewise for American soldiers between the war for Independence through the Civil War. Poneers on wagontrains and cowboys working the cattle drives depended on hardtack as their main source of calories. Simply getting enough calories was a problem even for farmers and city dwellers, but especially so for all the other previously mentioned groups. Since animal fat is the most concentrated form of calories, very hungry prople often crave fats and oils. I once heard a lecture given by a climber who was a lone survivor of an expedition climbing Mt Everest. They were hit by extended storms early on, that left them stranded i n place, freezing to death, unable to go up or back down to safety. He confessed to getting into the food stores early on and stealing all the tins of lard. He believed the extra calories he got from the lard saved his life, giving his body fuel to stay warm and strength to endure while the other members, basically all died from fatigue and cold. When you're freezing to death and lacking calories to burn, he said pure lard tastes better than any other foods be they meats or sweets... Hence the historic attraction for eating fatty beaver tails.

Beaver meat.
yes ban on hunting
These pests also lowered the water level in my pond but by digging dozens of holes and bank runs in the pond dams. That means war, I have to eradicate these nuisance critters. But they avoid all my traps so far. Conibears and snares either
That chain was put there to make everybody wonder why the chain was there
More videos please!
I use beaver meat skunk essence and beaver caster

All hunters are sadistic psychopaths who use animals to vent their frustrations, inadequcies and anger upon a weaker being, with the exception of those who hunt for pure survival and don't sit there with a big sh*t-eating grin on their face with a dead animal. Hunters try to tell you that they do it for a love of nature or what-not, but if that's the case, they would be a wildlife photographer or hiker, and wouldn't feel the need to end every experience with the act of killing. Hunters are absolutely no diffrent than a psychopath who tortures puppies and kittens before becoming a serial killer; hunters are simply dressed better and use equipment they buy at a store to engage in their depravity. Predators don't require much management by hunting, as they control their own populations and carrying capacity through competition and prey availability. If there's a lack of deer, they'll eat something else. Predators take the sick/weak, which keeps the herds strong, while human hunters go after the biggest/best, which weakens the gene pool. If you are in a blue state, please move to a red state like I did and work hard to pass laws that ban all unnecessary hunting. Help us destroy this archaic, sadistic culture. We have made progress in banning trapping and hunting contests, let's keep up the good work. Humans are the problem and we should give nature more areas for it to be left alone instead of developing every square inch of land. Here is the latest Federal bill that is extremely important is getting passed which will ban killing contests on Federal land. Keep up the pressure!
I thought the big Marten was a Red Fox so that IS big! LOL. Could you make a team of dog booties out of all those weasels 😹😹 keep the vids comin, boys
Nice job to u & mom! Do you guys ever make three ingredient Bannock bread on the trapline? I believe it's actually 4 ingredients with the water! Other than cooking it on the stove/open fire like most trappers do, you can also mix it in a baggie on the trail and form the dough over a stick and prop the stick over the fire to make Stick Bannock. I'm looking forward to trying your bread and Stick Bannock in the Alaskan bush. Keep the vids coming! Thanks!
She looked completely underwhelmed. Lol
I.love it.
Those old boys knew what they were doing back in the day. Very nice find. You could probably get the cabin back up with a little work. It looks solid still.
Another great video! I live in great state of Michigan and we have Amish here in Michigan to, I live in central part of Michigan! We have some Amish friends there great people! Suggestion can you guys make videos of veggie garden of tips, planting, harvesting, etc if you guys have a veggie garden? I thought I heard you guys raise a veggie garden when I was watching your tv show Sons Of Winter! I have a veggie garden it’s great fun!
I loved your guys tv show Sons Of Winter I just finished watching season 1 replays it was a great tv show I wish there were more season to your guys tv show anyway welcome to our great state of Michigan, I’m born and raised in Michigan just a few hours south of the Mackinaw Bridge! Next time if you guys have more free time cross Mackinaw Bridge and go visit Mackinaw City a great tourist town in Summer time, Spring/Fall time is better if you don’t want to be in big crowds and Mackinac Island is neat tourist place to even though I haven’t been there yet! Love northern Michigan 😃✋🏻👍🏻!!
I love the little doors
Thank you. Enjoy the vids keep em coming.
Interesting cabin.
Great vid looks like you flew out from 147.
Good eye, you are correct!
checking your traps once a month?
Nope, each loop gets checked every 4-5 days as required by law.
Is there somewhere we can view this data? I’ve seen gpa data for bucks but never does I’m curious on their movement patterns
Pretty darn neat!
Great video!
Neat little trappers cabin. Whoever did that had plenty of experience.
Absolutely! It's largely a lost art nowadays, especially all of the manual work with an axe. It's sure cool running across these little pieces of history.
Great to hear from you guys! Thank you for putting out cool content. Merry Christmas to you and all your family. Have an awesome 2022.
Thank you, and merry Christmas to you as well!
Hey, how you been? Married life seems to be agreeing with you. Love these old cabins. I really regret giving up my rural property. My new long term dream is to build a cabin somewhere up north for recreational use. Merry Christmas to you guys and the family. Take care and thanks for the video.
Married life is very good! Between outfitting this fall for bears and deer, and working on my (Dale) CWD project, we've been keeping busy, which is good but has unfortunately put a dent in our UA-cam time! We're hoping to remedy that now. That is an excellent dream; there is something very healthy for the body and soul to have a cabin out in the wilderness! Merry Christmas to you as well!
@@BackwoodsBoys oh yep this is why you look good got ur self a good woman lol congratulations to yeah both
Good to see a new video, missed the content.
Thanks for being patient with us! :) We'll try and keep the content coming a bit more regularly!
@@BackwoodsBoys 👍
Lot of hard work. I bet the trapper was proud of it
I bet so too. I can imagine he spent a lot of freezing winter nights holed up in there, glad he spent to time to build it the way he did!
..Been a while
Thanks for taking the time to do this, i love this type of stuff. Stay safe.
We're glad you enjoy this as well; there's just something so neat about finding old trapping cabins and seeing the incredible craftsmanship that went into them. Thanks for watching!
Welcome back
Thanks!
Where u been
Unfortunately life gets in the way of UA-cam once in a while haha. Between a summer of forest fires (almost lost cabins and lost a large part of the trapline forest), and a fall of outfitting (bears and deer) it's been tough to find time to edit videos. Hoping to fix that now though!
@@BackwoodsBoys well you look good & glad ur back sorry 2 hear about the hard times & hope it's all geting better 4 yeah & I'll be keeping eye out for yea take care & god bless bro
Where are you guys located
I believe that you should spend your time trapping and skinning child molesters and drug dealers and rappest and just for good measure a couple of crooked politicians. That would be something to watch 😂🤣😂🤣🤣
